End the year on a high note—and keep that momentum going into the new year!

Nov 3, 2022 | Activity, Consistency

There’s no denying it—the holiday season is a hectic time. Between work, social obligations, and travel, it’s easy to let healthy habits slide (I’m just as guilty as the next). But just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you have to throw all your hard work out the window! Here are my best tips for staying on track-ish during the holidays—and setting yourself up for success in the new year.

1. Make a plan.

The first step to staying on track during the holidays is to make a plan. Know ahead of time what you’re going to eat and when you’re going to workout. This will help you stay focused and avoid making impulsive decisions that can sabotage your progress.

Of course you won’t ALWAYS be able to do this (not knowing what food will be at a party, etc) but do it to the best of your ability. My favorite way to do this is to use MyFitnessPal – I enter my food plan for the day into the app and get a huge bonus: it frees up my mental space for the rest of the day because I don’t have to think about what I’m going to eat anymore (I already know!).

2. Don’t try to do it all.

One of the biggest mistakes people make during the holidays is trying to do too much. They try to maintain their usual workout routine, eat perfectly, and attend every holiday party—all while still juggling work and family obligations. It’s no wonder people get stressed out!

Instead of trying to do it all, focus on what’s most important to you and let the rest go. For example, if your goal is to still consistently workout through the holidays, remember that any movement counts! They may not all be ideal workouts, but something is better than nothing; and even impromptu dance parties while the cookies bake COUNTS!

Prioritizing will help you stay (slightly more) sane during the craziest time of year!

3. Set realistic goals.

It’s also important to set realistic goals for yourself during the holiday season. If you’re normally very active, it might not be realistic to expect that you’ll be able to stick to your usual workout routine while traveling or attending multiple holiday parties. And that’s OK! Instead of beating yourself up for not meeting unrealistic goals, focus on what you can accomplish given your current circumstances.

Maybe that means getting in a quick workout at home before the kids wake up or taking a brisk walk after dinner instead of sitting in front of the TV all night. These small changes can make a big difference—and they’ll help you stay on track without feeling overwhelmed.

4. Find a support system.

Finally, one of the best ways to stay on track during the holidays is to find a support system—whether that’s a group of friends who are also trying to stay healthy or an online community where you can share recipes and workout tips. Having someone (or several someones) in your corner will make it easier to stay motivated and accountable, both during the holidays and throughout the year!

If you need that support system, you know I got you! Join us inside Fit By Bit where we’re all staying healthy this holiday season – while still enjoying the heck out of ‘em of course.

Remember, the holidays don’t have to be a free-for-all when it comes to your health and fitness goals! By following these tips, you can end the year on a high note—and carry that momentum into 2023 and beyond!
