The Science of Habit Formation: How to Build Lasting Healthy Habits

Apr 27, 2023

Are you looking to build some healthy habits but not sure where to start? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! In this post, I’m going to dive into the science of habit formation and share some practical tips on how to build lasting healthy habits.

First things first, let’s talk about what a habit actually is. According to science, a habit is a behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously. I like to call them brain hacks because our brain actually WANTS habits (it saves time and energy). It means that if you want to build a habit, you need to do it consistently and make it a part of your daily routine.

Build habits

One of the keys to building a habit is to start small. You’re not going to be able to completely overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight, so don’t try to. Instead, pick one small habit that you want to build and focus on that. Maybe it’s drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning, or taking a 10-minute walk after dinner. Whatever it is, make it something manageable that you can stick to.

Another important factor in habit formation is consistency. It’s not enough to do your new habit once in a while – you need to do it consistently in order for it to stick. That means making it a non-negotiable part of your daily routine. Put it on your calendar, set reminders for yourself, and do whatever you need to do to make sure you’re doing it every day.

It’s also helpful to have a plan for when things inevitably get derailed. Life happens, and there will be days when you don’t feel like doing your habit or when something comes up that gets in the way. The key is to have a plan for how to get back on track. Maybe you have a backup habit that you can do instead, or maybe you just need to give yourself a little pep talk and remind yourself why you started in the first place.

Another tip for building lasting healthy habits is to make them enjoyable. If you hate doing something, you’re not going to stick with it. So find a way to make your habit enjoyable, whether that’s by doing it with a friend, listening to music while you do it, or rewarding yourself afterwards. The more you enjoy it, the easier it will be to stick with it.

And finally, remember that building healthy habits is a journey, not a destination. There will be ups and downs along the way, but as long as you keep going, you’ll get there eventually. So be patient with yourself, celebrate your wins along the way, and most importantly, have fun with it!

So there you have it, my friend – some practical tips on how to build lasting healthy habits. Remember, start small, be consistent, have a plan for when things go awry, make it enjoyable, and enjoy the journey. You’ve got this!
