Why Weight Loss Feels Harder Now (And It’s Not Your Metabolism)

Jan 30, 2025 | Activity, Consistency

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why does weight loss feel so much harder now than it did in my 20s?”—you’re not alone. It’s a question I hear all the time, and it’s a frustrating reality for so many women. The good news? It’s not because your metabolism is suddenly sabotaging you. Recent research has shown that your basal metabolic rate—the number of calories your body needs to survive at rest—doesn’t really change much between ages 20 and 60. So if it’s not your metabolism, what gives?

Life Happened

Here’s the truth: what changes isn’t how your body burns calories but how much you’re moving and what you’re eating. Think back to your 20s. You probably had more time for workouts, hobbies that kept you active, and maybe a little more freedom to prioritize yourself. But as life marches on, things shift. Careers, families, and the endless to-do list can leave your workouts at the bottom of your priorities—if they make the list at all.

For many women, starting a career means sitting for long hours every day. Whether you’re at a desk, in meetings, or commuting, that’s a lot of time spent being sedentary. Then add marriage and kids to the mix, and suddenly your schedule revolves around everyone else. Instead of hitting the gym or going for a run, you’re carpooling, cooking, cleaning, and managing a million other responsibilities.

And let’s not forget the convenience trap. When you’re rushing from one thing to the next, it’s all too easy to rely on fast food or packaged snacks. These options might save time, but they rarely align with your health goals. And if you’ve ever polished off your kids’ leftover chicken nuggets or mac and cheese so it wouldn’t “go to waste,” you’re definitely not alone. Here’s a little permission slip: it’s okay to let that food go to waste. Whether it’s thrown in the trash or eaten when you don’t need or want it, it’s still wasted. Choose the kind of “wasted” that doesn’t derail your goals.

So Where to Begin?

The thing is, weight loss now requires a level of intentionality that might not have been necessary in your 20s. Back then, you may have naturally been more active without even thinking about it. Now, it’s about making conscious choices to move your body and fuel it in a way that supports your health. That doesn’t mean you need to overhaul your life overnight, but small, consistent changes can make a big difference.

Start by looking at your daily habits. Where can you add more movement? Maybe it’s a quick walk after dinner, stretching during TV time, or sneaking in a workout video while the kids nap. And when it comes to food, focus on what you can add rather than what you need to take away. Incorporating more veggies, lean protein, and water can crowd out some of the less-than-healthy options without making you feel deprived.

Weight loss might feel harder now, but it’s nowhere near impossible. By understanding what’s really changed and making intentional, sustainable shifts, you can absolutely reach your goals. Remember, this isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up for yourself, one choice at a time. And trust me, you’re worth it.
